Some music is written for the moment. Some waits decades to be heard. This is the record of both — from the first sequences in 1988 to the release of Compendium in 2026.
Sidney Maestre and Reid Martin Basso meet in a music production class at San Jose State University. Sidney has instrumental tracks built on synthesizers, sequencers and drum machines, but no lyrics. He hands Reid a cassette of demos; Reid spends the evening writing lyrics that turn those instrumentals into songs.
The earliest songs are sequenced on an Ensoniq EPS — one of the first affordable professional samplers — with sampled drum sounds and midi controlled synthesizers carrying the arrangements.
They set up their synthesizers and sequencers alongside a Tascam 4 Track cassette recorder in Sidney's bedroom, turning the walk-in closet into a makeshift vocal booth for Reid. Over long sessions the duo commits four songs to tape, capturing the earliest fully realized versions of the Detsky Mir sound.
Detsky Mir leverages their demo tape to land gigs and start performing across the South Bay.
The audience arrives for the headliner and greets Detsky Mir with little enthusiasm. By the middle of the set the room has turned — proof that the band's blend of electronic music and heartfelt songwriting connects with listeners.
Creative tensions during sessions for a second demo tape bring the collaboration to a close. The floppy disks are boxed up, the Ensoniq sampler and the other synthesizers and drum machines are eventually sold, and the songs disappear into storage.
Sidney builds a career in technology, applying the same programming mindset that shaped his approach to electronic music. Reid joins the U.S. Air Force Security Forces and is deployed to the Bosnia war zone in support of NATO's Implementation Force (IFOR).
Sidney and Reid repair the friendship. The music stays in storage; nobody asks about the disks yet.
Nine years after reconciling, the two ask the question that reopens the catalogue. Recovery becomes an archaeological project as much as a musical one.
Reid returns to the studio to breathe new life into the band's old catalogue of songs.
Sidney tracks down vintage Macintosh hardware with a working floppy drive and MOTU Digital Performer capable of opening the original sequence files, then exports decades-old recordings into a modern production environment.
To recover the band's original sounds, Sidney finds the same model of sampler they used in college and brings it back into the studio so the original samples and sequences can be rescued.
Bass lines, synthesizer parts, drum programming and sampled sounds are rebuilt one track at a time. Rather than modernizing the songs, the band treats the work like preserving a historic recording — today's tools used to faithfully reproduce yesterday's vision.
Working from opposite sides of the country, Reid records new lead vocals while Wendy Lynn adds harmonies that enrich the original arrangements. Several songs prove better suited to Wendy's voice, and she takes the lead on those tracks. Audio files travel back and forth as performances, arrangements and production are refined.
With Wendy's addition the revived band takes a new name — honoring the original music while acknowledging that its story has grown beyond the original duo.
Disagreements over legal arrangements delay the release again. The project sits through the COVID years before the differences are set aside.
With the band back in agreement, producer Bill Williams is enlisted to finish the final mixes of the restored catalogue.
Songs born at the end of the Cold War, completed in a different century, are released to listeners for the first time after more than three decades in storage.
The full-length debut arrives on Yesterday Records. These aren't songs inspired by the 1980s. They're songs that survived them.
